Asbestos Still Used in U.S., Often Exceeds ‘Safe Limits’
Although over 60 countries have banned asbestos, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has yet to implement a total ban on asbestos cement. Now, a new study analysis has found that installation and removal of these cement products almost always results in asbestos exposure that exceeds ‘safe’ occupational limits.
“We found that exposures from asbestos cement products could be alarming[ly] high,” said Perry Gottesfeld, study author, “and certainly disproves the asbestos industry’s contention that these materials can be used in a ‘safe and responsible’ manner.”
Asbestos is linked to an increased risk of certain cancers, including lung and colon cancer. Despite an overall decrease in global demand, asbestos cement is still used to make products like water pipes, roofing, and exterior siding. Cutting asbestos pipes or boards often results in exposure levels 24-50 times higher than the OSHA short-term limit.
“The study demonstrates that there is an immediate need to ban all asbestos cement products that are sold in many countries,” added Gottesfeld, “as these are still being installed in millions of homes and commercial buildings.”
3+ Daily Servings of Whole Grains May Slow Brain Decline
Eating more than 3 servings of whole grains each day may be linked to slower rates of cognitive decline, a recent study has found. The results were most notable for Black adults who experienced less of a decline in cognition, perceptual speed, and episodic memory.
The study included 3,326 participants with an average age of 75. Data on food consumption was collected from each participant and specific tests were conducted to analyze brain function. There was a followup period of about 6 years, and changes in brain function were tracked.
Compared with those who consumed less than 1 serving of whole grains per day, those who ate more than 3 servings daily had scores that corresponded with better brain function at the end of the study. Interestingly, White adults did not have as significant positive changes as Black adults.
Whole grains contain a variety of nutrients, but their high content of dietary fiber may especially contribute to overall brain health, since fiber “feeds” the gut microbiome and emerging research has revealed a likely connection between gut health and brain function. The 11 Best Ways to Improve Your Digestion Naturally
Good digestion is key to good health, and there are a number of ways you can naturally help it out. Perhaps most importantly, commit to a diet rich in whole foods and keep highly processed foods to a minimum. Eat your food mindfully rather than rushing through a meal and chew thoroughly to start the breakdown process. Consume lots of probiotics and prebiotics, particularly from fermented foods, and try to minimize stress and late-night eating. (More)
Insecticides Linked to Lower Sperm Concentrations in Men
A recent systematic research review has found evidence that exposure to certain insecticides is strongly associated with lower sperm concentrations in men, which could be contributing to the current male fertility “crisis.” Researchers pinpointed two widely used insecticide classes, organophosphates and N-methyl carbamates, as having the most consistent link to lower sperm concentrations with exposure normally occurring through contaminated food and water. (More)
Specific Probiotic Strain Could Improve Chronic Constipation
Irregularity happens to most people occasionally but for some, constipation is chronic and has no apparent underlying cause. Experts currently believe that imbalances in the gut microbiome likely contribute to idiopathic chronic constipation but pinpointing which specific probiotic strains might help has been challenging. However, a new study may shed light in this area by finding that the Bifidobacterium longum bacteria appears to improve chronic constipation that has no known cause. (More)
Cannabis Use During Pregnancy May Increase Infant Health Risks
A recent large study has found that using cannabis during pregnancy likely increases the risk of certain negative infant health outcomes, including low birth weight, preterm birth, and admission to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). These findings add confirmation to previous research indicating a link between prenatal cannabis use and low birthweight babies. Although the study did not identify what type of cannabis was used, some experts advise avoiding all cannabis products during pregnancy. (More)
6 Great Benefits of Stretching + Key Tips to Do It Effectively
Stretching is one of the best and easiest ways to improve your flexibility. Better flexibility helps improve the range of motion of your joints and also helps your muscles to function optimally. Stretching can increase muscle blood flow as well and may help prevent injuries and improve physical performance. Be sure to warm up your muscles before stretching and try to stretch equally on both sides. Hold each stretch for 30-60 seconds, and practice daily for the best results. (More)

Hearing is only possible because of the approximately 16,000 tiny hair cells found in the cochlea – a small snail-shaped organ in the inner ear. These hair cells vibrate to turn sound into electrical signals but can’t be repaired once damaged, making hearing loss permanent.
